Overview

Today, we had the pleasure of speaking with Fort Lee Chamber of Commerce Director Jeffrey Ware. His journey began 12 years ago when he joined the Chamber while working with another nonprofit. After attending his first networking event at the River Palm in Edgewater, Jeff quickly realized the Chamber’s potential for fostering meaningful business connections. Over time, he took on leadership roles, including becoming the board of directors president, before assuming his current position as Executive Director two years ago.

Passion for Networking

Jeff’s favorite part of his role is the diversity of people he meets. "It’s incredible to see how people make money in so many different ways," he says, explaining that networking events introduce him to professionals from all industries. “You can find something you enjoy and make a living.” The Chamber’s work isn’t just about connecting business owners; it’s about rewriting the narrative of what a business can be, helping entrepreneurs create sustainable, passionate ventures.

In terms of daily responsibilities, Jeff manages everything from budgets to making crucial business introductions. Whether connecting a gym owner with a healthcare professional or organizing a casual event like the annual golf outing, these moments often spark lifelong business relationships. "Golf is huge for connections," Jeff shares, highlighting the importance of pressure-free environments for creating meaningful business relationships.

Economic Development in Fort Lee: Growth and Challenges

While Fort Lee is a vibrant hub for various industries, Jeff has seen some significant shifts, especially with real estate. One of the Chamber’s ongoing struggles is balancing the needs of office spaces versus residential developments. As office spaces have converted into residential units, maintaining business connections has become challenging. Despite this, key developments, such as Hudson Lights and The Modern, remain closely tied to the Chamber, helping to make Fort Lee more attractive for residents.

Healthcare and construction are two booming industries in Fort Lee. These sectors have seen significant growth with an aging population and increasing demand for home renovations due to high mortgage rates. On the other hand, mid-priced restaurants have faced a tough market, especially with inflationary pressures forcing price increases. Despite this, fast food and high-end dining continue to thrive.

Inflation's Impact on Consumer Behavior

Inflation has undoubtedly influenced consumer behavior. Jeff notes that fewer people are dining out or buying new cars as they once did. However, local businesses have adapted by retaining their employees, often opting to negotiate wages rather than risk losing valued staff. Inflation has forced small businesses to be more strategic, particularly regarding pricing and employee retention.

Small Business Support and Networking Opportunities

The Chamber of Commerce hosts a wide range of events—44 last year alone. These include golf outings, Mega Met networking events, and women’s networking groups with around 22 members. However, the most significant events are the 3-on-3 basketball tournament, which raises money for local scholarships and community initiatives, and the annual gala. Jeff notes that these events provide a platform for businesses to interact casually and build relationships.

Beyond networking, the Chamber partners with organizations like the New Jersey Small Business Council and the Fort Lee BDA to offer free business consulting services, particularly for older entrepreneurs. This initiative helps businesses navigate the challenges of the market by providing them with the resources and coaching they need to succeed.

Labor Market Trends

As with many areas, Fort Lee businesses have experienced challenges hiring and retaining employees, particularly in the service sector. Jeff explains that fewer people are willing to work in traditional roles like cashiers as more individuals opt to return to school or pursue entrepreneurial endeavors. As a result, some restaurants struggle to stay open for afternoon shifts due to a lack of well-trained staff.

Despite these challenges, wages have risen significantly over the past four years. Many business owners have increased salaries to retain employees rather than invest in training new staff. This trend reflects the broader economic environment, where retaining talent is often more cost-effective than onboarding new hires.

Long-Term Strategy: A Vision for Economic Growth

Looking ahead, the Chamber is committed to bolstering economic growth by building partnerships with organizations like the New Jersey Small Business Council and the Fort Lee Business District alliance. It aims to offer free consulting services to local businesses, particularly by connecting them with experienced retirees who provide one-on-one coaching. This mentorship model, focusing on members aged 50 and older, is part of a broader strategy to provide resources that foster business growth and development in Fort Lee. Through these partnerships and strategic support, the Chamber remains dedicated to strengthening the local economy and fostering a thriving business ecosystem.

In conclusion, the Fort Lee Regional Chamber of Commerce plays a pivotal role in connecting and supporting businesses within the community. The Chamber drives Fort Lee's economic resilience and growth through events and strategic partnerships, focusing on helping entrepreneurs navigate economic challenges.
